Summary

Joan Randle is a strong, capable woman living with her uncle in the wilds of Idaho - She likes Jim Cleve but is impatient with his laziness - After a quarrel, Jim heads to the lawless Montana border to prove himself, and a remorseful Joan tries to track him and bring him back. She finds herself in trouble when Jim Kells, the outlaw and scourge of the border, comes across her camp. - Kells is so intent on having Joan to himself that he kills for it, even some of his own men. When a huge gold strike is made at Alder Creek, Kells and his gang move in to loot the miners. Most disheartening of all for Joan is the fact that Jim Cleve has joined Kells' gang. What follows is an unexpected tale of crime, dissolution, bravery, and redemption.
