The rector, Peter, his wife Caroline and their twin girls move to Africa for a year to run a mission. The inhabitants of Turnham Malpas are bereft and do not take to the woman locum, Anna, who is very modern in her ideas - but the church is filled with parishioners determined to keep an eye on her. Then she brings Paddy, a down-and-out petty thief into their midst, sparking conflict within the community. They keep in touch with Peter and then a message arrives to tell them that the twins have been kidnapped, the parishioners are devastated and are determined to raise a substantial sum for Peter's mission.
