Summary

First published in 1853, this edition is based on research by Dr Sue Eakin, who spent a lifetime authenticating the story. In 1841, Solomon Northup, a free man of colour from Saratoga, New York, was kidnapped and sold into slavery. His account was a bombshell in the national debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War, and helped tilt public opinion with its reality and stunning detail of the characters that populate plantation society and intrigues of the bayou. Adapted into the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave.
