Summary
This book presents important documents (including her own publication Female Immigration Considered) along with an introduction and notes, as a means of commemorating and celebrating Caroline Chisholm in 2008, the bicentennial of her birth - and beyond. The book's title might appear to frame Caroline Chisholm in the past...the 19th century, in fact, for that is when she lived, imagined great things and did them. Having overcome indecision and self-doubt to begin her pre-eminent work of charity and social reform centred in Sydney in the 1840s, Caroline Chisholm made "an offering of her talents to the God who gave them". She unstintingly kept her vow, benefiting many, many thousands. It is through the historical accounts, art and literature, and, most of all, her own writing that we can come to know and appreciate who she was and who she can be for us. In or outside the Church, she is a commendable model.
