Summary
This book is primarily a look at the home front in the North during the so-called American Civil War, although the author takes us through some battle and prison scenes. Rose Mather is a frivolous young woman whose finishing school education has not prepared her for practical living, only the inconsequentialities of the life of a socialite. This reality is thrust before her face when the war comes on, and she finds herself scorned by other women because she cannot sew straight seams for the soldiers at the front, knit socks or bake treats for them. On the other hand, she is clueless as to the political issues that led to the separation of the country. Her development into a woman of substance in addition to an interesting romantic storyline, makes for a fascinating study of women and their crisis coping skills.
